About Institute
KrishiVigyan Kendra, Bhadrak was established in 2004 at Ranital under OUAT, Bhubaneswar (100% ICAR) occupying about 22.39 ha of land.
MANDATES OF KVK
The revised mandates of KVK as outlined by ICAR is Technology Assessment, Refinement and Demonstration for its Application and Capacity Development. These mandates are accomplished through various activities such as On Farm Testing, Front Line Demonstrations, training, farm advisories, soil health card, mobile text messages, other extension activities and production of quality seed, planting materials and other technological products.
On Farm Trials (OFT)
This KVK conducts on farm trials at farmer's field for technology assessment and refinement with regards to the location specific problems. The OFTs evolve active participation of both the scientists and farmers. As per the suggestions of the farmers and local agro-climatic conditions, the improved technology may slightly be modified to get maximum return. Various OFTs on varietal evaluation in rice, pulses, oilseeds, vegetable and fruit crops, nutrient management and integrated pest management modules, species diversity in fishes, feed and disease management, breeds of poultry, feed and disease management of livestock etc. are being conducted to solve the location specific problems. Since establishment of the KVK, a large number of technologies have been assessed and promoted in the district.
Front Line Demonstrations (FLD)
Frontline demonstrations are conducted to establish production potential of technologies on the farmers' fields. Proven technologies and assessed/refined technologies through OFT are taken under FLD at farmers' field. Besides, special cluster frontline demonstrations are currently conducted in large patches of 20 ha in pulses and oilseeds. Our focus is on improving yield of mustard under oilseed and greengram under pulses through these cluster FLDs.
Training
Major focus of training by the KVK is to impart practical work experience updating technological advances to the farmers. Need based trainings are conducted for beneficiaries which include practicing farmers & farm women, unemployed rural youths, school dropouts, extension functionaries and NGOs of the district. Each year the KVK conducts on an average of 80-90 training programs benefitting 2200 to 2500 beneficiaries of the district.
Farm advisory
Based on the weather forecast crop advisory is issued regularly to farmers through mobile text messages. Farmers visiting KVK attended by scientist to solve their problems and queries. The KVK staff also tries to diagnose the plant samples brought by the farmers and corrective measures are suggested. Scientists provide solution to problems related to agriculture and allied activities of the farmers during field visits or through telephone.
Soil Health card
Soil samples are collected from farmers field and analysed at Soil testing Laboratory of this KVK. Parameter tested are Soil pH, EC, organic Carbon, available N, P and K, iron, manganese, sulphur, zinc and boron. Water samples of fish ponds are tested to measure pH and total alkalinity. Every year around 600-700 soil samples and 200 water samples are tested. Recommendation is issued regarding manure and fertilizer application through distribution of Soil health cards.
Mobile text message
Agro-advisories and information are sent to the farmers related to crops and allied enterprises as mobile message to help improve the production and productivity. Every year 50-60 messages are sent to around 40000 farmers of the district.
